We will be staying in Loveland with the dogs. Because of the dogs, we will either need dog friendly day trips or short enough days to get back to Loveland and let them out. We like driving. We love water. We hate crowds. Personally, I would love horseback riding. The hubby has never been to CO. I also drive a 4 cylinder car. And if I should have posted this on a more regional forum, I apologize.
Please point me in that direction. Thank you!

You will have crowds in RMNP so be ready for that. Weekdays will be better than weekends. You need to be early in RMNP to manage crowds, so coming from Loveland you will have to be up and at it early. October weather is fickle. Nice days will be great, 50s and 60s at lower elevation with lots of chance to see wildlife. Up at the visitor center it can be cold, and there is possibility for snow.
TRR can have closures anytime after mid September so keep your eyes on that to plan your days. Your car will be fine. Dogs are not able to leave your car many places in the park for wildlife safety and dog safety. Not sure how you will be not gone long with the park being a ways from your base in Loveland. If you are going to be staying in Loveland , check out the horseback riding at Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch. There are some rides available from Estes Park year round. RMNP has a restrictive pet policy and that policy is strictly enforced.
An excerpt from that policy:. Pets must be kept on leashes no longer than six feet.
What travelers are saying
Pets may not make noise that impacts visitors or wildlife. Pet owners must pick up and dispose of pet excrement in trash receptacles. With your visit falling during the peak of elk rut in both Estes Park and RMNP, you especially need to keep your dogs away from the elk at all times. The bulls are very aggressive during the rut.
As the park policy explains, dogs and wildlife in RMNP don't mix. As already mentioned, Trail Ridge Road can be temporarily closed due to snow and ice at higher elevations. These temporary closures usually begin in later September and can be overnight into mid-morning, for several hours during the day or for several days. It all depends on the weather. The 24 hour Trail Ridge Road status line is You need to add at least 2 hours to the driving time estimate to stop for the many overlooks and photo ops along this route.
If you want to walk some of the short trails along Trail Ridge Road, you will need to add more time. You may find this Trail Ridge Road timeline helpful. Getting an early start will help some with the crowds. It can be very windy and cold along Trail Ridge Road in early October so have appropriate clothing. All of these areas are more dog friendly. There is no cell service in Poudre Canyon. A few of the forest service vault toilets along the way will be open, but many will be closed for the season. There will be no crowds. Moose are extremely aggressive around dogs at all times.
Parks and Recreation – A Little London Life
Moose frequent the upper Poudre Canyon and State Forest area. People drive 4 cylinder cars in Colorado all the time. We take turns with the dogs while the other does an activity, so maybe you could ride horses while he takes a nap or walks the dogs. You should be able to find enough allowable places for brief walks per park policy. What a wealth of information! It should go without saying that wild animals are dangerous. Sadly, after the viral video of a man harassing a bison a couple of weeks ago The River Walk is simply spectacular.
An expert level affair is the infamous dark room, where casual and random encounters occur completely shrouded in shadows… which is either incredibly sexy or incredibly anxiety inducing depending on who you're talking to.
